It was some of the most beautiful, and simultaneously alien-like views I’ve ever seen. Starkly juxtaposed next to the soft greens of the shrubs and gumtrees, this extremely isolated area of Australia is breathtakingly beautiful. I’d recommend spending a day or two exploring these landmarks before heading off. Some places may charge extra for going off-road, which sucks. It is a very beautiful experience to see them wild. We drove from Darwin to Uluru via Daly River and Litchfield, then over to Kakadu and through Katherine, stopping in at the Devils Marbles and Alice Springs and then across to Uluru. At night, you can relax under starlight and listen to the sounds of bush and the many crickets. Here many residents prefer to live in caves underneath hillsides (protecting themselves from the heat of harsh summers) and you can stay overnight in a former mine. It’s gorge galore, lush river-full and boasts one of the top 20 hikes in the world – the Larapinta trail. You can also arrive on an international flight via Singapore (4.5 hours) or Bali, Indonesia (2.5 hours). Epic? You can find me doing headstands on the edges of cliffs, chasing down baby goats or perched in a weird position trying to get the best photo. (It’s worth remembering that many rental vehicles will not be insured if you drive them after dusk in Australia). The scenery in the area is beautiful, and the trail is very well supported, you can hop on or off at numerous checkpoints and stay in very well equipped campgrounds for free. There is one resort next to the Marbles, the Devils Marbles Hotel, but it’s quite expensive. Another highlight of our outback experience was visiting Ubirr, a region within Kakadu National Park which is home to a great many Aboriginal rock paintings, some of which are many thousands of years old. If you’re looking for a shorter route, you can try and easier walk along the creek bed of the canyon which leads you up to a viewing platform. You can also get to Kings Canyon from MacDonnell Park if you have a 4WD. Starting and finishing in Alice Springs, the journey on the Red Centre Way covers around 1140km and runs through the very heart of the Australian outback, linking the MacDonnell Ranges and Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) with Uluru and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) in one big loop.
